Carers of West Lothian

Carers of West Lothian is now a well-established voluntary organisation which is a Registered Scottish Charity and Company Limited by Guarantee. It was started in 1990 by a small group of people, themselves carers who recognised the need carers had for information and support. They were concerned about the lack of support for carers in West Lothian and used their own experience to set up a service to support carers like themselves.

Throughout its existence Carers of West Lothian has maintained its initial purpose as a carer-led organisation that aims to provide carers, and in more recent times young carers, with support, information and a voice. It does so in a way that reflects the changing environment in which carers and the organisation operate. It continues to be led by a management board comprising mainly of carers who have first-hand experience of the caring role. It now employs skilled staff, supported by volunteers, to carry out the day to day running of the organisation.
