THE LARDER COOK SCHOOL
Since 2010 The Larder has been ‘CHANGING LIVES THROUGH FOOD’. We exist to help the most disadvantaged young people aged 14-16 years in West Lothian into work and training. Young people are referred here by High Schools and attend 1 day per week on our West Lothian Employability Programme to study SQA Qualification in Cooking in a Professional Kitchen and Front of House. We work with each young person to ensure they reach their own potential and connect them with their next step onto College, staying on at school or into work.
The students who attend The Larder are facing barriers to achievement in mainstream education and often experience difficulties in their own and home lives which prevent them from reaching their potential. We work with students in small groups of a maximum of 10 and have a high staff to student ratio. This allows us to work very closely with each student and offer them the vocational training they need. There are many opportunities for young people to succeed in the hospitality industry in Scotland and we are proud to work with local employers and West Lothian College to ensure each young person moves onto a positive destination.
We have a longstanding partnership with Food Creations, a local hospitality employer in Livingston owned and run by Simon Preece. Simon is a huge supporterof The Larder and Tutors here 1 day per week working directly with our young people to train and inspire them. He currently employs 4 young people who have previously attended The Larder in full-time meaningful employment with training and development opportunities. This is something we are very proud of.
Often when students are first referred to us they have been out of education and struggling to engage in any kind of learning for a long period. We offer them an alternative, vocational learning environment which they thrive in. Their confidence grows and they begin to see a future career path and believe in their own abilities.
We are a Social Enterprise organisation providing Cookery Experiences, Corporate Team Events, Kids Cookery Classes, Kids Birthday Parties, Café and Bistro Events, Social Evenings, Meeting Space Hire, Outside Catering, Employability Services, REHIS Training and Barista Training to businesses and residents in the area.
100% of the profit made from all this commercial activity goes back in to helping young people.
We are currently celebrating the end of a very successful academic year and are proud to wave off those students who are leaving us to move onto their next step in life.
We held a Celebration of Learning Lunch Event last week to mark our students achievements. We enjoyed a few speeches from The Larder staff and from a parent. We awarded certificates to all the students completing qualifications and celebrated our Student of The Year Award.
100% of our students studying for SQA Qualification successfully gained them.
