From their conception to now, Carers of West Lothian has maintained its purpose as a carer-led organisation, that aims to provide carers and in more recent times young carers, with support, information and a voice. It does so in a way that reflects the changing environment in which carers and the organisation operate. It continues to be led by a management board comprising mainly of carers who have first-hand experience of the caring role. It now employs skilled staff, supported by volunteers, to carry out the day to day running of the organisation.
As a result of their ethos, the organisations focus has been on quality. They have spent a number of years now looking to achieve a high quality mark, making the organisation more robust and able to provide a higher value service to local carers.
The Social organisation achieved the highest accolade available from PQASSO, who focuses on putting the needs of their service users (carers) first. Carers of West Lothian stated, “The process helped them improve the quality, type and range of carer support services they provide, due to continual monitoring, evaluation and regular carer feedback.”
It took a lot of hard work and effort to achieve the level 3 Accolade, Carers Of West Lothian had to review all of their systems to make sure everything linked together. they said “At times we asked ourselves if it was all worth it! However, it definitely was worth all the hard work and in some respects, PQASSO forced us into doing the jobs that we would otherwise have put off until another day”
I would like to see more Social Organisations taking on the challenge of organisational review, (where possible) to improve efficiency and both business and social outcomes. I applaud Carers Of West Lothian; firstly for taking on this massive undertaking and of course, for completing the hard work and achieving this tremendous stamp of approval.
Well done COWL for achieving this award and thank you for all your hard work and continual support to our community.
