Broxburn United Sports Club is a great example of volunteering success. The club which is ran almost entirely by volunteers, allows the community access to low cost, high value facilities; that are well utilised by the clubs large pool of dedicated volunteers.
With this volunteer support, BUSC is able to offer the community a range of programmes aimed at promoting health and fitness. The classes they offer show how inclusive BUSC are. They have a clear aim to give everybody an opportunity to exercise and, socialise in a fun, welcoming facility.
Men only and Woman only outdoor fitness classes are available, breaking down some of the social barriers preventing people from exercise.
Buggy Boot Camp is a great way for mothers and Fathers of young children, to overcome the isolation and lack of opportunity caused by being devoted to babies and toddlers. The group tackle this by teaching ways to exercise together with buggy in tow; the value of such opportunities in our communities is huge and must not go unrecognised.
Fitness through football is a programme aimed at P7 pupils; the course has been designed to engage participants in fitness training through football. The pupils will be tested at the start and end of the 8 week programme to show the gains each individual has made; this information is then shared with the pupil’s school.
Fun Start Fitness Is a course that has been developed for schools and is carried out in schools. The 5 week course covers: Children’s Mental Health, Importance of Water, Food Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Oral Health; the children then participate in a physical session that raises the heart rate, while encouraging the pupils to spur on their peers. BUSC proudly offer this programme to schools for free. They also offer these sessions to the community, at Strathbroke Community Centre for a small fee.
BUSC have recently built a new floor onto their ever expanding facilities. The new floor contains a multipurpose room that is a dance studio by day and a function suite by night, adding to the already large amount of possible revenue streams that will help to make this a sustainable project.
This impressive enterprise has a very small employed team of 3 whose success has been magnified by the 150 regular volunteers, who make all of their community support possible.
